The Magic Hour

4-HTP… For Healing the Traumas of Patriarchy (4-hydroxy-L-tryptophan and the cultivating community and ecology, in love and compassion!)

The project has begun with the cultivation of mushroom spores and it will culminate with the launching of new spores into the upper atmosphere. During these gestation days, waiting for the mycelium networks to incubate and eventually fruit as mushrooms, select participants will workshop their experiences with patriarchy’s destructiveness, whether as victim, perpetrator or witness, and choose to learn from and let go of these stories in lieu of cultivating community and ecology, in love and compassion. Their journals will be used as actual and metaphorical fuel for transformation as they are burned to heat the water for the tea made from the mushroom and the flames used to ignite the engines of biodegradable rockets containing spore filled caps to be distributed in the upper atmosphere to spread new seeds of transformation. The launching will happen at sunset, 5:02 pm, during the opening.

Charles Long (b. 1958, Long Branch, New Jersey) works in Mt Baldy, California. He received his BFA from Philadelphia College of Art, in 1981, and MFA from Yale University, in 1988.
